The 14 R's of Sustainability

Sustainability is well-known by the 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Nevertheless, as we have depleted most of our natural resources, the R’s in sustainability too has increased.

Here are the 14 R’s of Sustainability:

  1. Reduce: Living with minimal objects aids us in producing a smooth life. As we start a reduction in the number of things we employ, we in turn lessen the burden we place on the environment.

· Having a bucket bath can Reduce the wastage of water.

2. Reuse: As we start relying more on reusing, we are closer to saving the energy we would execute to create new objects.

· Include Reusable lunch boxes instead of using plastic bags that are of one-time use.

3. Recycle: Recycling is simply the process of converting waste materials into an altogether new and useful product. If recycling acts as a part of our routine lives, we will then be an active contributor towards reducing pollution and saving energy resources.

· Choose Recycling newspapers, books, batteries, or charger cords rather than dumping

4. Rethink: One of the most vital components of sustainability, rethinking is ascribed with the utility pattern in our daily lives. Rethinking helps us walk the talk of a sustainable life.

· Rethink before throwing any object that could be reused or recycled.

5. Reinvent: Reinventing is an extensive picture of sustainability that invites actions to make a sustainable lifestyle possible. Through reinventing, the ideas of sustainability unfold.

· Solar panels are an example of Reinventing our fuel source.

6. Repair: Rethinking before abandoning things can help us produce less waste. Repairing objects so that its life span may increase is a valuable way to reduce wastage of resources.

· Consider repairing rather than purchasing new appliances immediately.

7. Rot: Rot is popularly known as composting. Certain materials that we consider as waste can be composted back into nature.

· Food scraps can be composed which in turn transforms the soil and makes it rich in nutrients.

8. Restore: Whilst we cannot turn the time back where the planet was packed with abundant resources, we can still adapt to restoring. Consequently, it will allow us to leave a better place for the generations to come.

· Using solar panels can help in restoring non-renewable energy sources.

9. Respect: As we move on the path of sustainability, it is predominant that we showcase respect to people carving a niche and choosing a particular lifestyle to lead their life.

· We can always attempt to share our resources and create a sense of belonging with others.

10. Refuse: Refusing to use certain objects or elements which may not be an important aspect of our lives may substantially reduce the stress that we may load on the environment.

· Refuse to use plastic bags.

11. Replenish: Replenishing is simply regenerating the resources which could have been a waste otherwise.

· Rainwater harvesting helps us to conserve water that may have ended up in an already polluted lake.

12. Replant: Considering the impact of deforestation and increased carbon footprints, it goes without saying that replanting is the need of the hour.

· Home gardening is an easy way to replant, which is easy on the pocket and subsequently helps reduce stress.

13. Recover: Recovering goes hand in hand with recycling. It is important to be attentive to the resources or objects you choose to recover and later recycle.

· Efficiently choosing products can not only help in recovering but also creating / recycling usable products.

14. Responsibility: Most importantly, we are all responsible for the actions we take which could mend, recover, or break nature's cycle.

· A responsible person who pays heed to nature would aptly choose reusable bags over plastics.

The 14 R’s of sustainability teach us to conserve natural resources through rainwater harvesting, solar panels, home gardening, and switching to a self-sustainable life. Followed by this, a question clicks - Do we have that amount of time?
